BNHS, Conservation Education Centre Celebrates World Wetland Day


Wader Watch and Quiz Competition for Children
4th - 5th February 2012 

Every year, 2nd February is celebrated as a World Wetlands Day.  This date marks the signing of the 'Convention on Wetlands' in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran. Wetlands are essential ecological features in any landscape as they are home to hundreds of species of waterfowl as well as many other birds, fish, mammals and insects. They are unique in nature an essential to our survival as wetlands can remove and store greenhouse gases from the Earth's atmosphere, slowing the onset of global warming. The Conservation Education Centre (CEC) of BNHS is celebrating a two day event to create awareness about wonderful wetlands of our country. Join us for a wader watch at Sewri and then participate in an interactive quiz at CEC-Goregaon and win some exciting prizes. 

The programme details are given below:

·         WADER WATCH AT SEWRI MUDFLATS ON 4 FEBRUARY 2012: Get a first-hand experience of this magnificent habitat and all its eccentricities. Learn about wetland birds like flamingoes, egrets, stints, godwits and others. Understand the intricacies of wetland flora, fauna, their habitat and habits. Venue: Sewri Jetty, Sewri Station East (on harbor line). Time: 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
·         QUIZ COMPETITION FOR CHILDREN AT CEC GOREGAON ON 5 FEBRUARY 2012: As a continuation of a middle school level quiz competition will be held for students. The quiz aims to create awareness about Indian wetlands among the young generation. The quiz will include questions related with national and global wetlands. The winning group will win exciting prizes and certificates. The quiz details are as follows:
Venue: BNHS Conservation Education Centre, Goregaon East, Mumbai.
Time: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Eligibility Criteria: The participating students should be in age category of 10-14 years. The quiz will be conducted in English, therefore participants are expected to conversant in English.

Quiz Modalities:
·         Participating Groups: Group 1: 10 to 12 Years /Group 2: 13 to 14 Years
·         Group size: 50 (25 participants per group)

Registration process: Fill up the application form and get it attested by your school principal. Filled forms could be submitted in hard or soft copies which could send to the contact mentioned below.

8th January 2012: Bird watching @ Nilje Lake, Dombivali


Nilje is a small village about 8 kms from Dombivali on Dombivali – SheelPhata- Mumbai Highway. The small village pond hosts the winter migrants. Several water birds like Teals, Brahminy Duck, Pheasant tailed Jacanas, Moorhens can be sited at the pond. The surrounding area is a mixture of cultivated land or dry fallow land and scrub country.

Venue: Nilje Lake, Dombivali
Time: 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
MeetingPoint: Nilje Village.
Charges: Rs. 60/- per head.
How to reach: There is regular bus service from Dombivali Railway Station (East) to Nilje. Alternatively one can take share auto to Nilje.
